What Makes a Brand Restricted on Amazon?

Not all restricted brands are restricted for the same reasons. Here’s why certain brands are included on this list:

1- Completely Restricted Brands: Some brands are exclusively sold by the brand owner or by Amazon itself. No third-party sellers are allowed to sell these brands.

2-Restricted but Request-able: These brands allow you to apply for approval. In some cases, you’ll need invoices from an authorized wholesaler, and in others, automatic approval is based on your seller history. In other words, the brand is restricted from unapproved sellers or sellers limited account approvals. This means the brand appears as restricted, but you have the option to request approval to sell it. Alternatively, based on your seller performance history—including factors like account health, sales volume, and feedback—Amazon may automatically grant you approval to sell the brand without needing to submit documentation. Some brands also have specific requirements, such as brand-authorized partnerships or participation in their resale programs, to get approval.

3- Brands That File IP Complaints: Some brands allow their products to be listed but frequently file intellectual property (IP) complaints against sellers. We recommend avoiding these to protect your account from suspension.

How to Check Brand Restrictions especially if you are doing online sourcing and while in store.

What If You Still Want to Sell a Restricted Brand?

Here’s how you can try to get approval:

    1. Contact the Brand Directly: Get a letter of authorization from the brand, allowing you to sell their products on Amazon.
    1. Submit Wholesaler Invoices: Purchase at least 10 units from an approved wholesaler and submit the invoice to Amazon for approval.
    1. Automatic Approval: Some brands may allow for automatic approval based on your seller performance metrics. While rare, it’s worth trying!

Why Does Amazon Restrict Brands?

Amazon enforces restrictions for several reasons:

    • Counterfeiting Concerns: Protecting buyers from counterfeit goods.
    • Brand Value Protection: Some brands don’t want their products sold by too many sellers, diluting their market value.
    • Warranty Issues: Some brands only honor warranties if the product is sold by approved sellers.
    • Brand Registry Program: Amazon’s Brand Registry allows brands to maintain more control over their listings.

Selling restricted brands on Amazon can be tricky, but with the right information and tools, you can navigate the complexities and grow your business without risk.
